How I design products

An expanded double diamond

I am working in a cross-functional and multi-national team (SaaS), this means I talk with multiple global stakeholders during my design process. I care about 5 or 6 projects simultaneously, and by listening to our users, product manager, developers, leadership goals and the CEO vision, I organize and deliver UX/UI deliverables for SaaS platforms. My job consists of making the users, the business and the team happy while creating user-friendly design! (:

As with all the design approaches, mine is human-centered too (of course). After meetings with stakeholders where we define our vision, I priorities product design projects and set them in the roadmap together with my product manager.

When it's time to begin a project, I start with a discovery phase by doing UX research. I lead this phase involving real users, stakeholders, the product manager and the developers to narrow down the problem we are trying to solve 🔎 I like to involve stakeholders from the very beginning of my design process. This allows me to better address the context and find the most suitable solutions. For this phase I use a variety of methodologies, such as customer journey maps, empathy maps, surveys, competitor analysis, and so on.

In the meantime I review my product design colleagues projects from start to finish, by providing them with feedback and help where they feel stack.

From UX research, I get some insights that allow me to define the problem I'm solving and provide the team with some hypotheses 📝

Then, I start to sketch some hypotheses. I like to organize ideation workshops with the developers to let them know the user point of view and ask their opinion of hypothetic solutions. After all the hypotheses have been made, I transform them in middle-fidelity prototypes and test the concepts with real users. I also use online tools to be faster, such as UsabilityHub, TryMyUi, Maze. When I have results' test, I have syncs with the product manager, stakeholders, devs and team members to show the results and my suggestions to listen different point of views. I usually sketch “just enough” in this part to avoid wasting time on wrong ideas 💡 Click on the button below if you are curious of the last part of my design process!

As soon as I have a proof of concept approved, I start discussing the roadmap with the product manager, team members and stakeholders. The goal here is to make the best of our workflow, prioritizing design deliverables 🎯

When I, together with the product manager, have defined the roadmap, I continue developing my high fidelity prototypes for creating Figma files ready for implementation. I try always to invite developers to the design process to see what is possible, what might take too long to implement and find out edge cases. When prototypes are ready, I deliver them to devs, and I make sure that I will have remained sprint time to give additional UI requests as needed (devs need to think about what they need from the design department, and it is natural to see what is missing as they tackle the problem 💻). Working often in a remote environment helped me to sharp my communication skills with providing Loom videos and well documented Figma files.

After these steps, I review developers' work and when the implementation is done, we launch the project! 🚀

Then it's time to analyze it, talking with team members, sales agents, marketers and the data team to track results I previously determined with the team, thanks to KPI definition 📈

I work independently in a team with a solo Senior Product designer (me), 3 back-ends dev, 3 front-ends dev, 1 product manager and 1 engineering manager. In addition I work with the Product Design team with other 7 designers. There we build user-experience initiatives, scale the company, work on the design system and provide feedback to each other thanks to Design critique sessions. That allows me to have a bigger view of the workflow and efficiently organize our projects 🗄️

Plus, I spend a small portion of my time keeping myself informed of what is happening in our design world and learning overarching strategy and vision. This way, I can make sure the company stays aligned with overall design goals 📚

I use Trello, Notion or Jira to structure and follow projects to see how things are going and check if the team needs support 🆘 . And I use Figma and all the Adobe Suite to discover my design problems and build my high fidelity prototypes.

I currently work as an individual contributor, taking ownership of projects from start to finish. In my previous experiences I learnt management and leadership while being in Product Design Direction and Lead roles. Leading means organizing, coaching, managing and structuring my team on the delivery of appropriate design projects while my team, the company and users are happy. For me, it means to grow my team while the company and myself grow. My philosophy? "People don't need managers, people need coaches."

I tried to simplify what I do as much as I can. The design processes are often more complicated than that. And problems are always different. It is normal to go back to UX Research, UX testing, help, provide guidance to other team members, doing workshops, or come up with more hypotheses to make sure to meet our users' needs and business goals.

Case studies

I care about end-to-end platform projects as the Approval flow or the US election 2020 interactive data platform. And smaller projects as the Canadian Election 2021interactive platform project.

Content approval flow

Create an UI's app with UX methodologies for helping map content creators to not lose context during design creation. It reduced wasted time on wrong maps and on very long approval processes. From user research to high-fidelity prototypes and more. With a 4.5/5 of NPS.

“She was an inspiration and truly took me under her wing.”

Besides being the Art & Design Director, I had the incredible pleasure of having Alessandra as my mentor during my Internship at Mapcreator. With her passion and talent for Art, Design, Branding, and User Experience, she was ready to share everything she knew. There were never too many questions, nothing was ever too much. I can safely say that Alessandra is a very valuable employee. She is hardworking, kind, creative and does not stop until she is satisfied. What really impressed me most about Alessandra is how she always took the time to make sure I was doing and feeling good, during these strange times. It is very rare that you meet someone like Alessandra, as she was much more than a mentor to me, she was an inspiration and truly took me under her wing. She is a delight to work with and always inspires the people around her. Thank you Alessandra, for letting me grow, for your guidance and everything you taught me.

“The meaningful question about - How are you? -, and not just a superficial one”

There are a lot of adjectives to describe Alessandra, one will need them all to draw the complete picture: Boldness (leaving her comfort zone and moving to a foreign country; her design decisions), creativity (finding the smartest and functional solution), curiosity (always asking questions and reading up on new things). There are many more. But if I may only use two words, it’ll have to be care, and attention. The meaningful question about “How are you?”, and not just a superficial one. Always happy to share her advice. Following up on past conversations. Noticing when something’s up and not being shy to address it. Which goes along with her attention: active listening, hearing also between the lines, and asking for feedback in every situation possible. All these traits are found in everyday situations, and expressed through her thorough designs and deliverables.

A colleague you wouldn’t want to miss on your team, and a friend you want to take a walk with.

“Whenever I speak to her, I gain another perspective. She expands my vision.”

I had my first session with Alessandra on 28th of April and second session in 23rd of June. She is an amazing mentor and you immediately understand how clever she is. In both sessions, she gave me useful tips. The best thing for being her mentee is, she is very good at teaching the design thinking approach not only from the user side but also from the business side. She is a holistic designer and career mentor. I am inspired by her professionally that's why I keep on booking sessions to discuss new topics. Whenever I speak to her, I gain another perspective. She expands my vision. Apart from her mentoring skills, I really like her energy and personality. I would like to keep in touch with Alessandra. Thank you so much!

“Ale is a really approachable and genuine human being”

Ale is a really approachable and genuine human being. We found each other on LinkedIn by discussing the design tools we used at the beginning of our career - This is so random and so surprisingly lovely. During the session, we heard about each other's stories in terms of how we cope with life in pandemics, the struggle of being an immigrant, and also work experiences in a small but fast-paced growing team. In the future, I'm looking forward to following up with her to learn more about her in detail!
